In an era of globalization, the problem of regional competitiveness becomes a central element, both at the level of academic debates and of the efforts of elaborating regional development policies. The present paper focuses on regional competitiveness from a theoretical perspective, trying to answer some essential questions: the solidity of the concept and the new founding bases. Starting from the main theories in this domain, our endeavor aims to illustrate the main problems that appear in the process of understanding, analyzing and measuring regional competitiveness considering that the existence of a widely accepted conceptual framework is an essential condition for elaborating coherent growth policies.
