NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT IN SMALL BUSINESSES

Abstract

In a market where labels define software vendors, the power of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) acronym has permeated the small to medium enterprises market. Managers of SMEs realized they need a professional information system, just like the large companies. In Romanian small and medium firms, the skepticism toward IT and conservative attitude are widespread, so the first action to take is to persuade them that a solution for strong information systems is ERP adoption is an effective and efficient initiative. In this paper we will not justify the ERP adoption benefits, but point out some options and trends in order to help SMEs in their information systems management. We will emphasize open source software and software as a service (SaaS), known as the technology of choice.
