Abstract

A detailed interview was made with a Hungarian meat rabbit farmer at Bakonszeg. Old stable is used for housing and the Pannon White rabbits (130-140 does with offspring) are kept in traditional caged system. Feeding of pelleted concentrates and artificial insemination are used. It is difficult to comply with the welfare standards of the EU. The system has high labour demand and low profitability. The Hungarian slaughterhouses do not buying up rabbits from this kind of small scale production nowadays. To resolve this situation the farmer increases his production and builds a new rabbit farm with the support of Hungarian Rural Development Program (subsidy of the European Union).
