Abstract

Raising swine is one of the most important branches of one country’s national and international economies. In Romania, raising swine for meat relies 90% on such improved breeds as Marele Alb, Landrace, and Duroc, and on their half-breeds. The increase of the living standard of the population has brought about an increase of the consumption of animal produce and particularly of pork. Thus, swine play an important role in meeting the increasing demands for pork. Pork is very much demanded as food; it can be eaten both fresh and as cold cuts; it is also processed in the food industry and turned into canned meat. The factors that influence meat production can be classified into endogenous (genetic) and exogenous (environmental) factors. Real production is the production in concrete exploitation conditions determined by the interaction of endogenous and exogenous factors. It is desirable that real production be as close to or even identical to potential production, which can be done only if we ensure optimum maintenance and feeding conditions in correlation with the improving level of the biological material.
