PRECISION AGRICULTURE: POVERTY ANALYSIS OF ADOPTERS OF STRESS TOLERANT MAIZE IN NORTH-CENTRAL NIGERIA

Abstract


Poverty remains a significant challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with rural agricultural households disproportionately affected. We studied the poverty status of adopters and non-adopters of STM technology in North-Central Nigeria. The study garnered data through Mobile Device Data Collection (MDDC) method and analysed same through Foster-Greer- horbecke (FGT) Poverty Index, Propensity Score Matching (PSM), and Logit Regression. The findings reveal significant gender disparities, with female farmers experiencing higher poverty levels despite adopting STM techniques. However, both male and female adopters of STM saw improvements in poverty indicators, emphasizing the potential of STM to alleviate poverty. Socio-economic factors such as education, access to credit, cooperative membership, and information access were identified as key drivers of adoption, bringing attention to the importance of targeted interventions. To achieve more equitable outcomes, it is essential to enhance support for female farmers, improve access to resources, and strengthen cooperative networks.
