Abstract

This study proposes a symbolic, ethnographic, and semiotic “atlas” of the Țurcană sheep breed, one of the most culturally significant pastoral breeds in Romania. By integrating mythology, traditional knowledge, ethnographic data, and modern interpretations, the atlas maps the symbolic layers associated with the morphology, behavior, and cultural representations of the Țurcană sheep. The research highlights how this breed—diverse in its phenotypes (Brează, Oacheșă, Creață de Caransebeș, Ruginie)—functions as a cultural mediator between the pastoral world and the symbolic landscape of Romanian mountain communities. The authors of this paper approach the idea of a symbolic atlas of the Țurcana sheep breed to provide an interdisciplinary vision of the one that is nicknamed the “Queen of the Mountains”. Such a symbolic atlas contains a chronology of the Țurcană sheep breed, a regional map of the Țurcană sheep breed, mythological layers of the pastoral folklore of Arad and Banat in which the Țurcană sheep breed is found, and symbols and archetypes related to the varieties of the Țurcană sheep breed. All this is based on a rich bibliography consisting in articles and books on this topic
