WATER MANAGEMENT ISSUES IN THE SOUTH OF UZBEKISTAN: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIC RESPONSES

Eshev Sobir Samatovich, Alisher Khazratov Normurodovich, Elgiza Alibek Sobirova

Abstract

Uzbekistan, particularly its southern regions such as the Kashkadarya basin,
faces significant water management challenges due to climate change, rapid population growth, aging infrastructure, and dependence on transboundary water sources. This paper analyzes key issues including changing hydrological patterns, reservoir sedimentation, rising water demand, and groundwater overuse. It further explores strategic responses like infrastructure modernization, adoption of water-saving technologies, and policy reforms aimed at achieving long-term water security. Case studies such as the Koshtepa canal project and reservoir sedimentation trends highlight the urgency for integrated and adaptive water governance strategies.

Keywords
