EVOLUTION OF RURAL POPULATION AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract


Romania, with a total population of 19,644,350 inhabitants (2017), shares about 4% of the population of the European Union. Population is both a factor of economic, administrative and socio-cultural activity, and a consumption factor. Currently, Romania has two major demographic issues: steady decrease of the population and increase of demographic unbalances caused by the ageing of the population. In this context, the authors of this article present, based on their own analysis, the main trends in the evolution of total population of Romania and particularly of the rural population that will directly influence the development of rural areas.
