DOES DEPOPULATION DETERMINE LAND – USE CHANGES? CASE STUDY: THE WESTERN DEVELOPMENT REGION OF ROMANIA

IOANA ALEXANDRA COSTEA, ALMA LIOARA NICOLIN

Abstract

The changes in the landscape functionality and structure due to the demographic decline in the Western Development Region are pointed out through the land-use analysis based on two important elements: agricultural areas – human involvement present – and natural areas represented mostly by forests. The land cover transformations between 2000 and 2012 were related to a 24 years period of time (1992-2016) for the demographic analysis to point out the significance of human interaction with the environment and the lack thereof. For this analysis, GIS applications have been used for identifying communities with less than 100 people and also changes in different land cover categories. Results are being presented in correlation to the demographic decline that is observed for the territorial administrative units that contain those communities with a population with less than 100 people and where changes appear in the spatial reference of land cover categories such as agricultural surfaces and forests.
