Abstract

Swine meat production has progressively changed worldwide through the improvement of production systems and the transition from a system based on small non-professional family-owned farms to an integrated industry, an evolution that has determined the management of animal health and disease. Collecting and analyzing large amounts of data from animal research it can provided for swine meat producers some useful information about the welfare of the entire farmed herd and individual animals, and can contribute to improving the welfare and biosecurity of holdings and communities from the farm area through external and internal biosecurity managerial measures to avoid dangers coming from the outside world, the biosecurity of small and medium-sized professional farms and the welfare of swine becomes a major essential element of the intensive production system.
